Second edit:
Al is AMAZING. I’ve gotten my hair colored like five times before, and I’ve never been this satisfied with the result.
A large portion of my hair was previously treated with a dark brown semi-permanent dye, which made it challenging to work with, but Al did not disappoint. I gave him some reference photos (first three pics) and he gave me EXACTLY that
He told me he had to go with a slightly darker red because it’s impossible to lift all the residual dark brown dye from the ends of my hair, but I honestly can’t even notice and I’m so so happy with the end result. I also think it’s good for the hairdresser to know when to stop and communicate the expectations instead of recklessly trying to achieve some end goal and frying the hair in the process…which has happened to me before
The process: he lightened/lifted the hair dye and some of my natural pigment without using bleach (the Chinese term for it is 褪色 which literally translates to “remove color” or “fade color”)(I also knew it wasn’t bleach because when he slathered that stuff in the roots my scalp didn’t feel tingly or itchy), and then washed it off, and then applied the red color.
Since my hair was two-toned (grown out virgin hair at the root and color treated hair at the bottom), he used two different red colors to achieve an even dye. The whole process ended up taking close to four hours, but omg the result is AMAZING. Worth every minute and every penny. I never thought I could have such vibrant red hair without having to bleach it first! Look at the last two photos - no overhead light, backlit, and you can STILL TELL ITS RED!!!!!
Price reference: the fading treatment + single all over color + haircut + 5% cash discount = $280
I will be back…again and again for sure!
Edit:
I went back to this salon a year ago and Ivan was the one in charge of the cut this time, and he did an even better job. I had tried to give myself at-home bangs which failed miserably, but he was able to blend the choppy bits seamlessly in with the rest of my hair and created this super chic face framing side-bang situation. I felt like I walked right out of a J-drama by the time he was done cutting and styling my hair!!!!! IVAN FOR THE WIN
Al knew what he was doing for sure! I asked for lots of movement, lots of summery layers with face framing pieces and he gave me exactly that. Loved the hair cut
