I’ve gone through so much music, and Shazammed music while in Egypt. It’s annoying as a dancer to see every single dancer dance to the same 5 songs. Granted, they’re popular for a reason, but as a lover of music, a dancer, and specially a lover of Eg...

Saidi
Oh man, raks al assaya, or cane dance, is probably one of my favorites. Of course you don’t always need a cane to dance Saidi, but also it’s fun to use a cane with unassuming Saidi-rhythm songs!
Saidi
Beledi
Belediiiiiii! Possibly the juiciest suit of Egyptian music. The meat and potatoes! This is where you will feel the most emotion; where you must listen with your whole body in order to dance it correctly
Beledi
Sha’abi
Arguably the largest current genre of Egyptian music, and one of the most fun. Sha’abi is street music, and this became popular in the 80’s and it’s still going strong!
Shaabi
Mahraganat
Mahraganat is a more modern spin on Sha’abi, and fused with techno, rap, EDM, etc. A lot of topics tend to be current events, or they could just be party songs. List is constantly growing!
Mahraganat
Egyptian/Arabic Pop
Another ever-evolving topic! You’ll notice there’s repeats from sha’abi since the newer stuff is similar to pop. It’s considered pop when there isn’t a typical category to put it in and is modern/contemporary
Egyptian/Arabic Pop
Oriental/Classical Raqs Sharki
This was made popular during the Golden Era of belly dance. 30s-60s. Even into the 70s. These pieces carry so much nuance, and are danced more balletic than the other styles
Oriental/Raks Sharqi
Mejance/Entrance
A mejance, or collection of mini scenes, is typical of entrance pieces, where the song helps the dancer showcase what journey she’s about to take you on. The songs usually have different styles worn into one cohesive piece.
Entrance/Mejance
Finales
Finales are hard to come by unless you make them yourself, but I’m still on the hunt! They’re just what they sound like. Usually a shorter version of your entrance, but sometimes a short, dynamic song could be the perfect end-cap to your show.

Moody Belly Dance
Just as it sounds! This isn’t a genre per se, so much as it was just me making a section for a vibe certain songs give off!

Fusion Belly dance
No. Fusion is not just what you see in festivals or on tv. Fusion is literally the fusion of two or more things. Cultures, genres, styles, languages, etc. You will find a lot of different things here, but all of it mixed with Egyptian or Arabic.

Greek (yes they belly dance!)
Not gonna lie, Greek pop slaps! I especially love the band Knock Out

Other Arab
Just a catch-all for any other Arab music I don’t have a section for! Have fun going through the grab bag!

Dabke
Omg the way those debke drums just hit right in the core! Debke is found in various countries, like Lebanon and Palestine.

Drum Solos
Drum solos 🤩🤩🤩 They are simultaneously the most fun and the easiest to mess up if you are not prepared. But boy when that darbouka beat drops! 💥💥💥
