After a glowing ember burned a dime-sized hole in my new area rug, I stopped messing around with decorative screens and found ones that genuinely keep sparks contained. These sit flush and don't leave gaps at the bottom.

Even with a good screen, sometimes a log shifts and sends an ember sideways. A hearth rug saved my hardwood floor twice last January when I forgot to close the screen after adding a log.

Half my spark problems came from me jabbing at logs with a short poker and knocking embers everywhere. Longer tools meant I could adjust logs without opening the screen all the way.

Dragging firewood across the living room left a trail of bark and debris that I kept stepping on in socks. Proper storage inside meant less mess and fewer trips outside in the cold.

Learned the hard way that how you start your fire matters. Newspaper and random kindling caused the worst popping. These starters get a clean burn going fast with way fewer sparks shooting out.

Found out the hard way that a dirty chimney causes more sparks. Creosote buildup changes how air flows and makes embers pop harder. Cleaning mine once a year made a noticeable difference in how calm my fires burn.
