Baking a smash cake from scratch felt intimidating until I realized it's basically a tiny two-layer cake. These made the whole process foolproof, even for someone who once burned boxed brownies.

Balloons made the biggest visual impact for the least amount of effort. Five minutes with a balloon pump and suddenly my living room looked like a real studio.

A plain wall works fine, but a backdrop instantly makes the photos look polished. Hung mine from a curtain rod and the difference was night and day.

The outfit matters more than I expected. Whatever baby wears is going to be covered in frosting within seconds, so pick something cute but not precious.

A plain smash cake is fine, but a two-dollar topper turns it into the centerpiece of every photo. Small detail, huge payoff.

Nobody warns you about the cleanup until frosting is ground into your carpet. Learned that lesson at my nephew's party and vowed to prep the floor for my own kid's smash.

Baby needs somewhere to sit with the cake, and a decorated high chair becomes part of the photo. Dressed ours up in ten minutes and it looked like a throne.

Shot our first attempt near a window and the photos were dark and grainy. Added one light source and the difference made me wish I'd done it from the start.

You don't need a professional camera to get great cake smash photos. Shot half of ours on a phone with a couple of accessories and people assumed we hired someone.

Scattered a few extra decorations around the setup and suddenly every angle had something interesting in the frame. These cost almost nothing but made photos look layered and intentional.

The smash takes ten minutes. The cleanup takes forty. Having everything staged and ready before you start saves you from carrying a frosting-covered baby through the house looking for a towel.
