Lukas Nursery & Butterfly Encounter
Family-run on Corrine Drive since the 80s, and the vibe is half nursery, half gift shop. Great houseplants, tropicals and pots, and they'll talk you out of buying something that won't make it in your yard. Bonus: they're dog friendly.
Palmer's Garden & Goods
The Florida native specialist. If you want a yard that laughs at drought and feeds the butterflies, this is where you buy your coontie, firebush, muhly grass and milkweed. Check their site for retail hours before you drive out to Groveland.
Green Isle Gardens
College Park's neighborhood garden center: bromeliads, orchids, succulents and a killer selection of pottery and garden art. Small, curated and easy to pop into on a Saturday morning, and they do gorgeous custom container plantings.
Apenberry's Gardens
Old-school St. Cloud grower with fair prices on palms, shrubs and shade trees, and staff who'll tell you exactly how much water and sun each plant wants in our sandy soil. My go-to for landscape-size plants without the big-box markup.
Vander Pol Nursery
Right here in Kissimmee and all about food you can grow: mango, avocado, banana, jackfruit, moringa and citrus that's already thriving in our climate. The owners are generous with advice, and this is where my backyard mango came from.
South Eden Edible Nursery
Not glamorous, but the Poinciana Home Depot on Cypress Parkway is the closest garden center for most of us, and their Florida-grown annuals, mulch and bagged soil are solid for the price. Go early on a weekday for the freshest plant delivery.

Tucked on Neptune Road in Kissimmee, this one is for the plant nerds: rare aroids, bonsai, unusual tropicals and things you won't find anywhere else in Osceola. The owner is passionate and prices are fair for what you're getting.

A St. Cloud-area grower that's great for buying in bulk: hedges, palms, flowering shrubs and ground cover by the flat when you're redoing a whole bed. Call ahead for what's in stock, and prices beat the retail garden centers.

Everything in Florida grows fast, so you'll prune constantly. These Fiskars are the pair I've had for years: clean cuts on hibiscus, crotons and citrus, and they don't rust out in the humidity if you wipe them down.
