Ambrose Parry is actually Chris Brookmyre and his wife. Brookmyre is one of my favorite modern mystery writers so I had to check out this series, which is set in 19th century Edinburgh and follows a young doctor. Dark and utterly fascinating.

A suprisingly fun series featuring an old coroner, Siri Paiboun, in communist Laos who is plucked out of retirement to investigate all sorts of murders. I learned a lot about Laos and got really attached to the characters.
