For saltwater reels I usually stick with penn because I believe they are most reliable. For freshwater the brand varies.
I personally have had good luck with durability with this reel and it feels very smooth. It also is a little less pricy then others.

I recommend this rod because it is light weight and it gets the job done. It matches with every baitcasting reel because it is black. I usually use a 6ft 9inch rod for freshwater with medium heavy action but that is just my preference.
