Most headlamps slide right off a kid's head or blind everyone in the room. I went through five before finding ones that fit properly and had a dim red mode so nobody's screaming about bright lights at 2am.

Headlamps started it, but I noticed the hallway itself was the real problem. Pitch black, weird shadows from the window. A few cheap glow additions turned it from horror movie set to space station corridor.

Some nights the headlamp stays on the nightstand and they just want to grab something with their hand. I learned that adult flashlights are way too heavy and the buttons are impossible for small fingers.

Half the nighttime bathroom trips in my house were fake. The kid just wanted to get up because they were anxious. A solid bedside setup cut the wandering by about 80 percent, no joke.

Sounds silly but we started doing ‘indoor camping’ to practice being brave in the dark. Tent in the living room, headlamps on, snacks packed. Within a month both kids were fine walking to the bathroom solo.

Reading about the dark before bed changed the whole conversation. Instead of ‘the dark is scary’ it became ‘the dark is where cool stuff happens.’ Took about two weeks of bedtime reading to shift the vibe completely.

Once the hallway fear was conquered, we took it outside. Backyard at dusk, then after dark, then a real campsite. Each step built on the indoor practice and now both my kids grab their headlamps and run outside when it gets dark.
