After that close call I needed something loud on my wrist that I could trigger without fumbling through pockets. These sit right where I need them and scream louder than anything I could.

A driver told me they literally didn't see me until the last second on a well-lit street. Turns out my dark running gear was basically camouflage after 6pm.

Running with my phone flashlight was embarrassing and killed my battery. A proper headlamp changed my early morning runs from sketchy to actually enjoyable.

Hoped I'd never need any of this but my running buddy got chased by an off-leash dog last spring and had nothing on her. Now we both carry something.

Telling my roommate ‘I’m going for a run' wasn't a real safety plan. Now people can see exactly where I am in real time without me doing anything extra.

Carrying pepper spray, a phone, keys, and an alarm in basketball shorts pockets was a disaster. Everything bounced and I sounded like a wind chime.

Passed out from dehydration once on a summer run and a stranger had zero idea who to call. Never running without ID info on me again.

Dehydration on a solo run is scarier than it sounds — nobody's handing you water and your judgment goes fuzzy fast. Learned that the hard way at mile eight last July.

Rolled my ankle on a root because I was wearing road shoes on a gravel path at dusk. Being injured AND alone in the dark is a combo I never want to repeat.

Running alone five days a week without recovery gear caught up fast — my knees started screaming by month two. These keep me functional enough to keep going.
