The streets at Sovereign Hill are uneven cobblestone and packed dirt. I wore cute boots on day one and could barely walk by 3pm. These kept my feet alive for the rest of the trip.

Ballarat weather changes three times before lunch. I packed for sunshine and got sideways rain, biting wind, and then sunshine again all within two hours.

You will be there longer than you think. I planned for three hours and stayed for seven. Having the right bag meant I did not have to trek back to the car every time I needed something.

Sovereign Hill looks like you stepped into the 1850s. Every building, every costume, every street is worth photographing, and I kicked myself for not bringing better gear on day one.

Gold panning is the highlight and you will want to do it more than once. I went in with nothing and wished I had brought a few small things to make the experience way more fun.

Food inside Sovereign Hill is decent but lines get long and prices add up fast with a family. Packing some of your own stuff meant we ate when we wanted and saved money for souvenirs instead.

After a full day at Sovereign Hill your legs will be wrecked and you will want to explore Ballarat itself. These made the evening and next morning way more enjoyable instead of just collapsing in the hotel.
