The humidity hit me like a wall the second I stepped off the plane at Horn Island. Three of my go-to travel items broke or became useless within two days. These are the ones that actually held up.

I almost missed half of these because nobody told me they existed until I was already there. The Torres Strait Islander culture is deeply layered and most visitors only scratch the surface unless they ask around.

Most visitors never leave TI, which is a shame because the surrounding islands each have a completely different feel. Getting between them takes some planning but it's worth every logistical headache.

Getting to Thursday Island involves more planning than most Australian domestic trips. I messed up flights, accommodation timing, and ferry connections before I figured out the system.
