Digital tools I use for writing (usually across multiple devices)
I’ve been using Ulysses since 2020 and I love the projects feature. There’s so many ways to organize work.
Ulysses
Very useful when writing away from a desktop. I typed up my first novel (from paper) in 2012 on a smart phone. Really started using in 2015 and beyond. Love the organization features.
Google Docs
Sometimes, I need a random number either for a fiction work or to pick which blog post I’m writing that day. This app is awesome for that.
Pretty Random - RNG
Such a great resource to capture ideas and snippets when they show up. Useful when the internet lags and I can’t access my other programs.
Notes - Apple iCloud
I was resistant to pages for a while, but in the MFA program it’s a must. No lag and can convert to docx easily. Love all the features.
Pages
Mostly a reading app, but I use the amount of time per chapter and write that many sentences/paragraphs.
Amazon Kindle
I love being able to design book covers, blog headers, instagram posts and so much more. The possibilities are endless.
Canva: AI Photo & Video Editor
I love being able to read other blogs and post to my own. There are so many cool features to explore and ways to grow.
Jetpack for WordPress
Great to avoid distractions on your phone and get the creative juices flowing elsewhere. Plus the little trees and plants are cute
Forest: Focus for Productivity
A great place to read and get some ideas flowing. Also a great way to post and hopefully make some cash here and there.
Medium
A social media for newsletters. Still exploring this one, but I really enjoy it so far.
Substack - A new economic engine for culture
A great place to engage with other writers and creators. Can easily become a distraction.
TikTok
A wonderful social media to connect with other writers and readers. Can be a distraction.
Instagram
A great app for organization and storing ideas and outlines.
