I have lived in, and travelled Alberta for close to 25 years. During that time, I have stayed in many properties across the province, focusing mainly on Central and Northern Alberta. One thing has stayed consistent during my travels - hospitality is ...

Grande Prairie, Alberta

I have been travelling off and on, in the Grande Prairie Market for over 20 years. I've stayed at several different properties during that time period, and summarize my recommendations in this list.

This is the best hotel that I've ever stayed at in 24 years of business travel in Alberta. It has fantastic clean rooms, with many different configurations for that business traveller.

The ammendities are second to none as well.

There is a very cozy restaurant and bar located on the main floor, that has a great menu, and decent sized TV's to watch sporting events.

Breakfast is NOT included, but there are different rate packages where you can include breakfast as part of your daily rate.

A MUST visit when you are conducting business in the Grande Prairie area.

Very clean and cozy property. It's located a little north of downtown, very close to many popular amenities.

There is a really nice restaurant attached to the hotel, and a popular pub across the property in the same parking lot.

I've stayed here several times over the years, and always enjoy the hospitality.

I have not stayed at this property in a few years, but my experiences there were always positive.

It's centrally located in the heart of downtown.

It definitely hits the spot for that budget business traveller.

There is a restaurant/pub attached to the hotel, and across the parking lot there is an Earl's Restaurant - one of the most popular spots to eat in town.

Fort McMurray, Alberta

I’ve been travelling to Fort McMurray since 2001, and have stayed at several different properties over the years!

This is the “best”, Best Western that I've ever stayed at in Alberta, and it's not close!

The rooms are clean and very modern, and all of the amenities are first class as well!

On the main floor near the lobby, is a restaurant and bar! The food is awesome.

But I need to speak specifically to the breakfast! It's included in the rate, but it's a good sized buffet which includes and omelette bar! :-) They are so delicious.

The only downfall of this property, is it is on the far north side of town, situated in an industrial park. No amenities are within walking distance.

Indoor parking is available too.

A MUST stay for your next business trip to the Fort McMurray region.
Best Western Plus Sawridge Suites | Fort McMurray, Alberta

Tim Mushey The Busy Active Dad profile picture
This is one of the newest properties in the Fort McMurray area, close to the edge of town on the south side!

Rooms are very modern and spacious, and the suites are above average in size, with a very modern layout! Breakfast is included, and I've always really enjoyed their menu.

I have not stayed at this hotel for many years, but when I did, it was always a good, comfortable stay.

I was never wowed there, but the pricing was always very competitive in the busy downtown hotel marketplace.

The Keg Restaurant is attached, which is a nice perk if you want quality food without leaving the property.
Nomad Hotel & Suites | Fort McMurray

Tim Mushey The Busy Active Dad profile picture
I've only stayed there once, but it was a very comfortable stay.

It's located on the southside of town, with easy access to many amenities close by.

Breakfast is included, and I recall really enjoying it!
Microtel Inn & Suites by Wyndham Fort McMurray | Fort McMurray, Alberta

Red Deer, Alberta

I have been travelling to Red Deer since the spring of 2001, and have stayed at many properties over the years. These are the ones that were the most memorable and recent!

Tim Mushey The Busy Active Dad profile picture
I have stayed here approximately 6 times between 2023 and 2025, and I've always enjoyed my stay. It's on the north side of the city, close to 67th Street and the Highway #2 junction.

There are several really nice restaurants only a short drive (or short walk) away, that I've enjoyed eating at over the years.

The rooms are always comfortable and clean, and breakfast is included.

I recommend the King kitchenette suits. I stayed there in January 2025. It was a nice spacious layout, that gave me lots of room to relax and catch up on work.

This property has gone through a major renovation since I last stayed there in 2023. It was older and dated then, but still clean and comfortable.

At that time, it had a lobby bar and restaurant, which I ate at, and really enjoyed.

The new look boasts the “newest and grandest casino in town” as per their website. It looks quite large every time I drive by on Gaetz Avenue.

I can't remember if breakfast was included in my daily rate.
Red Deer Resort & Casino | Red Deer, Alberta

Sylvan Lake, Alberta

Sylvan Lake is one of the BEST lake resort towns that I have ever stayed in, during my nearly 25 years in Alberta. You might be wondering whey I would stay here for business? Well it's only 25 kms from Red Deer, often the hotels are cheaper unless it...

I just LOVE this property! I've probably stayed at it close to 20 times over the years.

For business, it's only a 25 km drive back to Red Deer, and I'd much rather wake up looking at a lake then concrete buildings in Red Deer.

For personal, its one of the best spots to stay in the area, but don't wait too long to book if you are looking at a get-a-way between June and August. Our summers are short here.

The hotel has always been clean and comfortable, with several nice room configurations. The breakfast is AWESOME, located on the main floor right by the front desk.

The pool and hot tub always attracts my attention, weather I am staying there for work or personal trips.

The hotel is located on the main street, and from there you can walk right across the street to the marina, beach or several blocks of shops, pubs and restaurants.

It's only a short drive back south in to the city site, where all of the typical grocery stores and resturants are located.

DO NOT judge a book by its cover! I drove by this hotel for over 20 years, and never even researched staying there.

It looked very dodgy from the outside, and quite a long walk to the waterfront, where all of the activity is.

When my regular hotel was booked up in the summer of 2024, I decided to give it a try.

It had changed hands at some point, and was now a Days Inn!

My goodness was I very impressed! The rooms were completely renovated. They are a bit on the smaller side, but very comfortable.

And there is a restaurant on site. The restaurant is the “host” for breakfast, that is included with your daily rate!

But again be warned, it is a bit of a longer walk to where all of the activity is, down on the water front. But if you are not in a rush, there is a path that will get you all the way there, mostly with the beach view.
Days Inn by Wyndham Sylvan Lake | Sylvan Lake, Alberta

Jasper, Alberta

Jasper is one of my favourite destinations in all of Alberta, and my heart was broken when it was ravaged by wild fire in 2024. But they are on the road to recovery, and the hotels/lodges that I've stayed in over the years, are all open for business.

Tim Mushey The Busy Active Dad profile picture
This is just an absolutely gorgeous property! Dreamy really.

There are so many room configurations to choose from - even stand alone cabins which I highly recommend!

Breakfast is not included at this property, and everything gets a little pricey, but you get what you pay for right?

There is a golf course on site which is an absolute DREAM for a prairie kid to golf on - I've played there mutliple times. Outdoor fire pit areas, and mile and miles of trails to explore.

There is so much shopping on the site, and great pubs/restaurants too!

Ohhhhh do I love this property!

I've stayed in these stand-alone cabins for work, and for personal!

What a treat they are!

They are the only cabin style accommodations right in the town site.

There are other motel-style rooms on the property, which I have not stayed in. I've walked through them, and they are incredibly cozy as well.

Breakfast was not included, but there are so many amenities close by, to purchase groceries and cook in, or go out and treat yourself.

I have stayed at this property 3-4 times over the years, and it was always clean and comfortable.

It looks like it has changed hands again, but the layout and everything seems much like I rememebered it.

One thing that I do recall about one of the layouts that I stayed in - there was a cozy room configuration, that had a pull out couch, 1 bedroom, then a loft up on a second floor with another Queen bed!

That was a great place to stay when I travelled with a colleague on a budget.

I took a customer golfing here years ago, and I was completely blown away.

The course is challenging, but not super difficult for golfers who know there way around a course.

But what I found challenging, was paying attention to each shot, when the scenery was 10/10 perfection!

On that day when I took my customer, it was September, and we did not start super early in the morning.

We were having so much fun, we started another 18 holes, even though it was getting later in the afternoon, and darkness would become an issue.

Well finally on the 14th hole, of the 2nd 18, we both had to admint that we could not see the balls any more.

So we packed up and headed to a local pub for dinner.

Clearly a memory that I'll never forget.

High Level, Alberta

Don't lie, you had no idea that High Level was an 8 hour straight shot north of Edmonton? I had NO IDEA where it was, when I moved to Alberta in the early 2000's. It's quite a cool little town, the golf course is AMAZING, and there are quite a few ho...

For a hotel in a small town, where many of the properties are old and dated, I LOVED my stay here!

It was a super cool layout, and with the motel style design, I had access to my room from inside the property AND outside doors too. That made getting my luggage and golf clubs in and out of my room very easy.

I was able to park right in front of my room, and walk straight up to the door from the outside. The outer doors were very secure, so I still felt safe.

They have a really cool layout for a resturant and bar, and they have a very nice free breakfast that is served in this location.

Cold Lake, Alberta

The Cold Lake Region is one of my favourite places to work in all of Alberta. Cold Lake is a mini version of my “home lake - Lake Winnipeg”, in Manitoba, Canada. They town is divided in to 3 distinct areas, and there are quite a variety of hotels ava...

I've probably stayed at this property 6 times between 2023 and 2024, and always enjoyed it.

Everything is clean and comfortable, and there is a restaurant on site.

I believe breakfast is included in the restaurant for certain items, but if you want anything more you pay the difference which I found totally reasonable.

I would say this property is right in the middle of the Cold Lake Tri City region, which makes access to all amenities very easy.
Best Western Cold Lake Inn | Cold Lake, Alberta

St. Paul, Alberta

I've worked in, and travelled through St. Paul and area for over 20 years, but only started to stay over night there since 2023. There are a few hotel options, and some new restaurants and amenities have been added over the years.

Tim Mushey The Busy Active Dad profile picture
I LOVE this property. I've probably stayed here 4 times since 2023.

I remembered that they have ample power outlets in the parking lot, because I needed to plug in my car once when it was FREEZING in January.

The rooms were awesome, and free breakfast was above average.

There is a Boston Pizza right across the street if you want to watch the game, eat and hang out.
Canalta Hotel St. Paul | St. Paul, Alberta

Calgary, Alberta

It's Calgary - big city with so much going on! I don't stay there for work too often, but when I do, I stay at the same place now. But I will also discuss a hotel that was “my 2nd home” when I moved here for work in early 2021.

Tim Mushey The Busy Active Dad profile picture
I LOVE this property! I stay here when I am in Calgary for work.

It's a very unique layout. There are 2 “halfs” of the property. The cool thing is they are across the street from each other, attached by an above ground pedway.

The rooms are nice, spacious and comfortable.

There is a restaurant and lobby bar that is very inviting to hang out in, after a busy day at work.

There is also a pub onsite to watch the game, relax and unwind.

Breakfast is not included but the menu is AWESOME down in the lobby restaurant.

I “LIVED” in this property for a few weeks when I moved to Alberta over 20 years ago now.

Obviously I don't recall many details from back then, but I really enjoyed my stay.

It's situated right on the major thoroughfare of Blackfoot Trail, with easy access all around Calgary.

I recall the lobby bar and restaurant being very good, and that there is a comedy venue onsite which could be a great way to relax and potentially entertain customers.
Hotel Blackfoot | Calgary, Alberta

Hinton, Alberta

Hinton is a GREAT community, approximately 45 minutes to the east of Jasper. I've stayed here several times for work and pleasure over the years.

Tim Mushey The Busy Active Dad profile picture
What a view that you get from this property, of the majestic Rocky Mountains.

I have not stayed here for a few years, don't recall many details, but when I travelled for work, it was always a positive experience.
Ramada by Wyndham Hinton | Hinton, Alberta

Stettler, Alberta

Stettler is approximately one hour West of Red Deer in Central, Alberta! I really like this little town, and have stayed here for work and kid's sporting events several times over the years.

Tim Mushey The Busy Active Dad profile picture
I've always enjoyed my stays at this property over the years, weather it was for kid's sports trips, or more recently for work.

Rooms are good, the layouts are standard. No real issues there.

The mattresses are a bit firm for my liking, but if you love FIRM sleeps, you will be very satisfied with these mattresses.

There is no breakfast served on site, they give you a breakfast in a bag. So if you are looking for something more substantial, you will have to go to the Smytty's or somewhere else in close proximity.
Canalta Hotel Stettler | Stettler, Alberta

Lac La Biche, Alberta

The Lac La Biche area was the first place that I camped/tented when I became an outdoor's person in Alberta in the mid 2000's. I loved the area then, and I love it even more now. I've been staying there for work since 2023 and just love the vibe in t...

This is a very nice property! I've probably stayed here 4 times since 2023.

The rooms are clean and spacious, and often I'll get upgraded which is always a nice touch.

Breakfast is included with your daily rate, and it's always very good with a variety of options.
