Understanding your kid may not be as great as you think (when standing in the admissions line at MIT) ~ reality check.

As I hear crazy comments from my clients, that usually come from other parents on the sidelines, I use TikTok to debunk the "I heard that..." BS.
I heard that… Let’s talk about college majors. Is it easy to change your college major? Well, that’s a school by school answer. Having an idea of what you wanna do is always a good thing and understanding what that timeline looks like isn’t even better idea. More advice to level the playing field.
Listen up — Early Decision is a contract, not a wish. If you apply ED you’re committing to attend if admitted. The one real way out is if the school can’t meet your documented financial need; many colleges will release you from the ED agreement if the aid offer is clearly insufficient (you’ll usually need to request a release and provide proof). Need-based aid and merit aid are two different beasts — if you don’t qualify for need-based aid, “not enough money” won’t save you. Your parent and your counselor have to sign the ED agreement, so don’t go rogue. Do your homework on each college’s ED and financial-aid rules before you sign anything — this isn’t the place for impulse moves. Test prep BS from a private school. Sometimes school counselors are so busy that they do not stay up to date on recent trends or things happening an the 3000 colleges (4-year) across the country. Ugh!
Standardized tests… Important? I think it depends on what colleges you’re looking to apply to. In reality, testing helps you get in, good test scores help you get into selective majors, and good test scores often get you marinade: scholarships! Some schools don’t give a flip about test scores. But before you decide that you don’t give a Flip about test scores… Let’s look at the schools that are on your student’s list. I personally think that learning to take a standardized test is a muscle that your kids should try to strengthen and they can do that for free at Khab Academy or college board.org. If they’re truly a bad test taker, maybe they need extra time and you should look at that as a learning difference. Maybe, if they’re a bad test taker, you need to only look at schools that don’t take testing into consideration. But the fact that this private school told parents and students that it’s not important because colleges don’t look… NOT COOL - OR… I’m actually going to follow up on that and find out if it’s what they really said, or what the student and parent heard. Because those are two different things. #TestS#TestScoresd#StandardizedTest##SAT##ACTe#CollegeAdvicerdthat
