Here are the tools I've bought that I actually use all the time.
I bought two sets of these for making large projects. I use them for things like magic loop and knitting flat. I found this is the size needle I use the most, so I bought these rather than longer cords for my interchangeable set.

This set gave me everything I needed to get started, but it isn't an expensive set and I definitely needed to do repairs after I'd been knitting for a while. It was a great kit for getting started and figuring out if I liked knitting though.
