Billy’s Favourite Training Treats 🐾
Training a giant breed puppy means going through a lot of treats, so I’m always looking for options that are tasty enough to keep Billy engaged without piling on unnecessary calories.
Billy is a Bernese Mountain Dog, so these are the treats we’ve reached for time and time again during recall practice, loose lead walking, puppy classes and everyday training. They all have a few things in common:
* 🦴 Easy to snap into tiny pieces so you get more rewards from every bag.
* ✨ Low enough in calories to use throughout the day.
* 🐶 High value, so they actually keep your puppy’s attention.
* 🎒 Easy to pop into a treat pouch for walks, training sessions or coffee shop outings.
* 🌱 Gentle enough for everyday use as part of a balanced diet for a growing puppy.
One thing that’s made a huge difference for us is making the treats tiny. Puppies don’t care how big the reward is—they care that it comes quickly. Breaking treats into pea-sized pieces means you can reward good behaviour more often without overfeeding.
These are the treats I’d happily buy again and again for Billy, and they’re always stocked in our house for training, enrichment toys and rewarding all those everyday moments when he’s learning how to be the best boy.
As always, introduce new treats gradually and adjust your puppy’s daily food allowance to account for training rewards.
