Egypt's midday sun will blow out every highlight if you're not prepared. I ruined an entire memory card of Colossi shots before I got the right gear dialed in.

Timing is everything at this site. I showed up at noon my first visit and the statues looked flat and lifeless. Went back at golden hour and nearly cried at the difference.

Not everyone wants to lug a full camera kit through 100-degree heat. My partner shot the whole trip on a phone and some of her Colossi photos turned out better than mine.

My first trip, sand got inside my zoom lens and it made a grinding sound for the rest of the vacation. Luxor will destroy your equipment if you're not careful.

Everyone takes the same straight-on photo from the road. After three visits I found angles that make the statues look completely different from every other tourist snapshot.

The Colossi are a 15-minute stop for most people, but the entire West Bank is a photographer's playground. Plan a full morning and you'll come home with a complete portfolio.

Raw files from Luxor always look flat and dusty straight out of camera. These tools pulled the warmth and detail back into my Colossi shots during the flight home.

I wandered around the West Bank aimlessly my first visit because I didn't know where the best angles were. These resources saved me hours on return trips.

Standing in direct sun for hours while waiting for perfect light will wreck you if you're not dressed right. Heat exhaustion almost ended my second Luxor trip early.

Handheld at 200mm in shimmering desert heat produces soft images every time. I thought my lens was broken before I realized heat haze and camera shake were the real problems.

My best Luxor shots sat on a hard drive for two years before I finally printed them. Seeing the Colossi at 24x36 on my wall made the whole trip feel real again.

Booking logistics from the US or Europe can be confusing. I overpaid for my first Luxor trip because I didn't know which services were worth it and which were tourist traps.
