This was the book I used in my coursework. Great foundational read.
Fantastic book to understand the research behind the gut microbiome. Written in a way that can be helpful for both the clinician and the layperson.
Psychobiotic Revolution: Mood, Food & Science
This is a newer book with a lot of good feedback. Full disclosure: It's still on my TBR list.
This Is Your Body on Trauma
Great “encyclopedia”-type resource for mental health nutrition topics
Nutrition Essentials for Mental Health Guide
The definitive resource on how trauma affects the physical body.
The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind & Body
While some research is overstated, this book provides a nice overview of mental health nutrition topics. I like to think of it as a primer to give you topic ideas to then branch out and do more research. For clinicians.
Nutritional Treatments for Mental Health Disorders
Great book with excellent information. Organized well AND has easy recipes!
The Brain Plate: Cookbook & Mental Health Guide
Fantastic resource for your clients. Very little misinformation, and what's there isn't terrible. The 6-week plan at the end is incongruous after describing the importance of gradual change earlier in the book. I encourage clients to use it as an idea generator and a list of recipes instead.
Eat to Beat Depression & Anxiety: Nutritional Psychiatry
Felice Jacka is one of THE premier researchers for mental health nutrition. Written for the layperson.
Brain Changer
Must read for dietitians and other healthcare professionals to reduce the risk of causing harm with your nutrition and health-related recommendations.
Culture, Foodways & Counseling: Guide to Nutrition Care
Make sure you're familiar with this before sharing it with your clients!
The Body Image Workbook: 8-Step Program
Body Trust has amazing resources for anyone interested in improving their client's body image. Which should be all of you.
Reclaiming Body Trust: Break Free from Trauma
Intuitive Eating is a well-known, and helpful, approach to health promotion. Just remember, that it's not appropriate for every client!
Intuitive Eating 4th Ed: Anti-Diet Approach
My preference for improving a client's relationship with food, over Intuitive Eating.
The Mindful Eating Workbook: Mindfulness for Healthy Food
Personal Development
Profit First, but for your personal finances
The Money Habit - Mike Michalowicz
Great book to learn the behavior behind habits and how to change them.
Atomic Habits: Easy Way to Build & Break Habits
Important discussion to drive your food and nutrition recommendations and choices.
Eating While Black: Food Shaming & Race
Because not talking about it not only doesn't help anyone, but it perpetuates harm.
White Fragility: Why It's Hard to Talk Racism
Also has an associated workbook and podcast.
How to Be an Antiracist (One World Essentials)
Still on my TBR, but has been highly recommended to me, by a source I strongly respect.
Antagonist, Advocates & Allies: Wake Up Call Guide for White Women
The first in a series of books, but the only one I've read so far.
