Book Series
I first read this while browsing the shelves in the school library. Such a wonderful, yet terrifying concept, of being able to live in the story one is reading. And such is the responsibility of one who has the power to read others into the story being read.
Inkheart
Surprised how obscure this series is, I can't even find the whole series in my local library. First discovered this book at my school library, love the myths that get brought to life in the story, and the willpower of the heroine. She shows respect to other races, which in turn wins her powerful allies to help defend her kingdom from an ever-expanding empire.
The Cry Of The Icemark
I love any book that includes dragons, and this one in particular. I also enjoy watching the author's writing improve, as the first book was started when the author was 15 years old. It's rather poetic, as the story begins with a 15 year old boy finding a dragon egg. He decides to raise the dragon, and as a result is pulled into cataclysmic events that will decide the fate of a nation.
The Inheritance Cycle
This series is written for a wider age range than most books, and can be enjoyed by both kids and adults. I picked it up at a friend's recommendation, and of course I read it because I love dragons. The characters have simple motives and are easily related to by kids, but the writing is quite detailed and the world and problems feel quite realistic and engaging.
Wings of Fire
This is yet another book I discovered in school and fell in love with. This series contains all manner of fascinating mythical creatures and a few rare humans protecting them. I wish such a conservatory existed in the real world.
Dragon Rider
This is not typically a theme I read, but I do love a good magic system. Following the main character as they age is fascinating, and very well done, feels very natural the way their personality shifts and their power grows.
Codex Alera 6 Books Collection by Jim Butcher
It's been a few years since I've read this series and I'm excited to return to it. Another fantastic magic system, and of course there's a dragon in it.
Obsidian Trilogy
I waited years to read this series, as I wasn't sure it would live up to the hype surrounding it. Set in a post-apocalyptic North America, the people in this land struggle to survive both hunger and the cruelty of their government. I enjoy the debate this book sparks around needing a government to ensure safety, and how far power can be pushed until people begin to desire freedom over safety.
The Hunger Games
I have loved this series ever since I was a child. This series is timeless and has always captured my imagination. I still secretly hope that someday I'll be able to stumble into a fantastic world through the back of my closet or some other magical door.
The Chronicles of Narnia
This particular series is set in a post-apocalyptic world. I don't read this genre as often but I do quite enjoy it. From the strange inventions to the desperation of the survivors, this makes me wonder how well I'd survive in the same circumstances as our main character.
Maze Runner
This series starts a little slow, but the action picks up well after the introduction. The story is set in a medieval time period, and mostly adheres to the rules of the real world, and yet some of the fieldcraft of being unnoticed does seem to bend the laws of reality at times.
Ranger's Apprentice
This is a timeless favorite series for me. Classic good versus evil, set in an alternate reality, where only those with magic are aware of their world within the real world. Excellent worldbuilding, it makes the idea of an invisible magical world exi...
Harry Potter
Novels
Quite the unusual read, this particular book is told from the perspective of Death himself. This is the tale of a German girl during World War II who develops a dangerous love for books, and the people she loves and loses.
The Book Thief
This novel is set in a medieval time period, some time after Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. A few of the same characters reappear and the main character goes on a quest worthy of a Knight of the Round Table.
The telling pool
A melancholy yet charming story of a boy with red eyes. He has difficulty finding acceptance from peers and adults alike, and struggles to accept himself. He manages to find a few true friends, who encourage him to finally embrace himself and his app...
The Extraordinary Life of Sam Hell: A Novel
Found this particular gem in my school library. Set in a medieval time period, dragons are universally hated. This is very bad news for the princess, who is born with a dragon claw where her finger should be. She is forced to hide her unusual feature...
Dragon's Keep
A Christian fiction novel I enjoy reading now and again. It meshes the concept of the coming of Antichrist with a small town feel and a personal grudge. An insightful look into the nature of faith.
The Visitation by Frank E. Peretti, Paperback | Barnes & Noble®
One of my favorite Princess stories where the princess isn't even interested in marrying the Prince in the beginning. This is much more than just a love story, as two hearts learn to see eye to eye.
