For those that are new to the theater scene or just want to share in a mutual love for it, here are my top picks for Broadway musicals
In my opinion, the all time best. It's no wonder it's the longest running Boradway show of all time. It's a shame the Broadway run came to an end in April of 2023 but there will be a national tour soon and a potential revival of sorts.
The Phantom of the Opera
It's a long one and tragic but so worth it and moving. There's also many great filmed versions of this and the book by Victor Hugo of course :)
Les Misérables
For those who have only seen the movie, it's absolutely worth listening to the Broadway soundtrack that inspired it. Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth help make the music worth listening to for years to come (And to sing along to!)
Wicked
Why not? It's a refreshing and educational take on Alexander Hamilton that should be required in schools
Hamilton
A great take on the Romeo and Juliet story. Both the 1961 and 2021 film versions are worth seeing
West Side Story
A worthy stage adaptation of a popular film in my opinion
Legally Blonde
Beautiful music but this really became a favorite after watching the NBC live musical starring John Legend in the title role
Jesus Christ Superstar • Official Global Website
Just as hilarious as the original Mel Brooks film from the 1960s in my opinion
The Producers
A bit biased here considering this was of my favorite shows that I ever performed in but it's an interesting take on the Dr. Seuss books and fun for both kids and adults.
Seussical
My favorite of the Disney movies that have come to Broadway and the first ever show I saw on Broadway :)
Beauty and the Beast
I always enjoy the story by Louisa May Alcott. To me, the musical version does not disappoint
Little Women (Musical) Plot & Characters - StageAgent
I admit it. I enjoy much of the music of Andrew Lloyd Webber. However, I only recommend the stage musical NOT the movie
Cats the Musical
I also recommend the 1996 film version with Madonna
Evita
A good introductory musical for kids. I'm also a sucker for stories about spunky girls.
Annie
A hilarious adult parody of Sesame Street and other kids shows with foul mouthed puppets. It actually beat Wicked for the Tony for Best Musical.
Avenue Q
Beautiful and tragic musical about teenage angst. It really takes place in the early 20th century but even resonates to this day
Spring Awakening | Music Theatre International
This is not only a must-see movie but fun to see on stage too
Grease
This is a fun listen. Especially if you're familiar with the 1977 film of the same name
The Goodbye Girl | Concord Theatricals
Great music that can be enjoyed by anyone
Godspell
A must watch if you're a massive Peanuts fan like me
