The dorm mattress is basically a vinyl rectangle designed to survive decades, not to let you sleep. I tried sleeping on mine for two weeks before caving and ordering a topper. The difference was so dramatic my roommate ordered one the next day.

Regular twin sheets do not fit a Twin XL. I learned this the hard way when my fitted sheet popped off three times in one night. Spent the rest of the semester sleeping on a bunched-up mess until I finally bought the right size.

I showed up to college with a pillow from middle school. Flat as a pancake. By October my neck hurt so badly I thought something was seriously wrong. Turns out, a decent pillow fixes a lot of problems you didn't know you had.

Dorm thermostats are controlled by someone who clearly hates students. One week it's 80 degrees, the next week your room is an icebox. Having layers you can add and remove kept me from filing maintenance requests every other day.

Nobody tells you this, but hundreds of people have slept on your dorm mattress before you. That thought hit me during orientation and I ordered a protector before I even unpacked my clothes.

Floor space in a dorm is a joke. My roommate and I could barely open the door all the way. Raising the bed and using every inch underneath was the only way we fit everything without living in a pile.

Your roommate snores. The hallway is loud at midnight. The sun comes through those cheap blinds at 6 AM on a Saturday. Sleep in a dorm requires accessories you never thought you'd need until you're running on four hours for the third day straight.
