I used to think bitters were decorative. A couple dashes of the same bottle for everything. Then I tried swapping flavors per cocktail and realized they're doing about 60% of the heavy lifting in an Old Fashioned.

I wasted money on bottom-shelf stuff thinking bitters would cover it, then wasted money on top-shelf stuff that was too good to mix. This is the sweet spot I landed on.

Muddling a sugar cube for five minutes while your ice melts was my biggest mistake for the longest time. The right sweetener dissolves properly and actually adds flavor instead of just sweetness.

Regular ice cubes from your freezer tray melt in about 90 seconds and water down your drink before you're halfway through. I didn't believe ice mattered until I tried making one big cube.

I used to stir with a butter knife and strain through a fork. It technically worked but the drink never came out right. Proper tools cost less than one bar tab and last forever.

Drinking a proper Old Fashioned out of a regular water glass is like eating a steak off a paper plate. It works, but something feels wrong. Good rocks glasses changed the whole experience for me.

I used to skip the garnish entirely because it felt unnecessary. Turns out the orange peel isn't decoration. The oils change the aroma and the cherry adds a little sweetness at the end that ties everything together.
