DIY Halloween Costumes

I’m a sucker for Halloween, but I don’t usually go do anything. Typically I hyper-fixate over what I want to be ALL YEAR, then go run errands in costume all day and play video games at home the rest of the night. Anyway, here are some of my past co...

Here’s my costume! See the link for the video that has a more clear image. I got the idea originally from @_que.sera.sarah on TikTok, but I modified it for financial viability.

Other materials work too, but the black cheesecloth was the best in my opinion (so soft!). I got 4 yards and doubled it over but I wish I would’ve gotten more and sewn it together to make it one large sheet.

The original creator I saw do this costume used Ostrich feathers (which look way cooler in my opinion) but they’re pricey! I recommend pampas grass/some other cheaper option. If you go to Michael’s in the floral section during the late summer, you’l...

I bought this specific pack of puck lights and painted the white plastic around the light black so it wouldn’t show through the cover. Any puck lights should be fine as long as they have a red light option!

A black top is perfect for the body, I used a turtleneck for the most coverage, but any plain black top (sleeves are better for coverage as well) should work fine. I got mine secondhand, but the linked top is the same cost as what I paid!

Black shorts of any kind to cover your butt are good! I used some old workout shorts similar to what I linked, but I don’t know what brand they are because of how old they are. If it’s really really cold for you, black tights should be fine!

I have an old pack and I don’t remembered where they’re from but these medium-sized (hole size) fishnets look similar. Swap these for warm tights if it’s cold by you! Or wear those flesh-colored warm tights and fishnets over them.

I didn’t get to use these because finding a black set was difficult locally (everything I bought was near me due to a time crunch) so I used costume butterfly wings and sewed a cut up black cloak on the outside and inside of it to cover the color. ...

Of course, wear whatever shoes you’re most comfortable in. I recommend black so it matches the vibe. I got my chunky platform Docs from Ross for like $70 (shoutout Ross!) but I’ve linked the most similar pair I could find. I’m a die hard Docs girl, ...

Find the cheapest black skate helmet you can - you’ll be gluing things to it. It needs to be a skate helmet, not a bike helmet. Skate ones have smooth round tops and holes in the right spots for your antennae. I bought a kids helmet with a Mohawk t...

Such a simple but fun costume! I made the solid (not lit) one about 6 years ago and it’s still going strong, I upgraded to the lit one on 2024. The lit one is more top-heavy so I don’t recommend it (though it is more fun in my opinion). The instructi...

I can’t remember where I found this template originally, but I printed this very large (onto 3 pages of paper, then taped them together - it took a lot of trial and error to get the size I wanted) and traced over the lines - with a mechanical pencil ...

Use whichever gen feels best for you, but be sure to get the 12x12 inch square of cardstock NOT the 8.5x11. You won’t have enough of one continuous sheet of paper if you get the 8.5x11.

I got these 12 inch 5/16” dowels, but get longer ones if that feels right to you! Trial and error is okay. I wouldn’t recommend thinner dowels though - for sturdiness.

If you’re using wire, I recommend you get the thickest wire you can handle bending on your own. Anything thinner than that and it will not hold up your plumbob. Wire of any kind is likely to get tired of holding up your plumbob regardless. Proceed wi...

A simple, cheap, thick-ish headband is what we want here! If you can find one cheaper from anywhere, use that. Just be sure it’s not one of those tiny thin ones - that won’t be structurally-sound.

While not strictly necessary, black tape to wrap around the dowel/wire between your Plumbob and head accessory will help it not stick out like a sore thumb.
