The liner is everything. Without it, fabric bunches and you're doing that weird side-shuffle. These all have built-in compression or mesh liners that keep the shorts locked in place while you chase your toddler across the sand.

Nothing worse than sitting in a wet swimsuit at a beachside restaurant while your kids drip ice cream on you. These dry fast enough that you can go from ocean to lunch without leaving a puddle on the chair.

Drawstrings dig in, rigid waistbands leave red marks. After a big beach lunch I need shorts that expand with me, not punish me. These all have elastic or hybrid waistbands that flex.

Board shorts that go past my knees turn into anchors in the water. But short-shorts aren't my thing either. These hit right at or just above the knee, long enough to feel covered, short enough to actually swim in.

Sand plus salt water plus walking equals raw inner thighs by sundown. Learned that lesson on a family trip to the Outer Banks. These shorts have liners or fabrics that prevent the sandpaper-thigh situation.

Got a sunburn on my upper thighs through regular swim trunks once. Once was enough. These have UPF ratings that actually block UV, which matters when you're out from 10am to 4pm with the family.

Spent twenty dollars on cheap trunks once and the drawstring broke on day two of vacation. Never again. These are all under thirty bucks but they don't fall apart after one trip through the wash.
