The paths on Kitchener Island look flat in photos but they're uneven stone and dirt. I wore sandals day one and had blisters by lunch. Day two I got smart.

The plants on this island are wild. Palms from India, flowers from Central Africa, trees you can't find anywhere else in Egypt. I nearly cried when my phone died at the best garden section.

Aswan regularly hits 45 degrees Celsius in summer. My first day I thought I was fine with regular moisturizer. By evening my face felt like it had been sandblasted.

There's one small kiosk on the island and it runs out of water fast. I watched a family of four share one warm bottle because they assumed there'd be vendors everywhere. Plan ahead.

I showed up knowing almost nothing about the plants and spent half my time squinting at faded labels. A little prep turned my second visit into something completely different.

You can only reach Kitchener Island by boat. Most visitors take a felucca, which is a traditional Nile sailboat. The ride is beautiful but I was wildly unprepared the first time.

After eight hours in the sun on Kitchener Island, I crawled back to my hotel room feeling half-cooked. These are the things that made the evenings actually enjoyable instead of just recovery sessions.
