I used to be the parent squinting into the sun holding a program over my head like a visor. After I nearly passed out at a July baseball tournament, I finally invested in real shade and now I'm the one everyone crowds around.

My back declared war on me after sitting in a $12 camp chair for eight hours. Spending a little more on a real chair turned out to be the difference between walking to the car and limping to the car.

I ran out of water at a tournament once and paid $5 for a tiny bottle from a concession stand. Never again. Now I pack like I'm preparing for a desert expedition and I regret nothing.

There's a special kind of desperation that hits at 2pm in July when there's no breeze and the canopy is just trapping hot air. These saved me from becoming a puddle in my chair.

I applied sunscreen exactly once at a tournament and got the worst raccoon tan from my sunglasses you've ever seen. Now I layer protection like I'm going into battle, because honestly, I am.

Concession stand nachos cost $8 and taste like cardboard. I started packing real food after my third tournament of eating overpriced hot dogs and regretting every bite.

My phone died at 1pm during a tournament and I missed filming my kid's only goal of the season. She still brings it up. Now I carry enough battery power to charge a small village.

My first tournament I made four trips from the car carrying loose items like a pack mule. Now everything fits in organized bags and I do one trip like a person who has their life together.
