These games take characters, settings, and stories from the original RPG itself, Dungeons and Dragons.
The first really good D&D based RPG, open world, great characters, engaging story.
Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition
I'm not a huge story guy but the story in this game is incredible. Top 5 game ever for me.
Planescape: Torment: Enhanced Edition
Less story-based and more of a dungeon crawl, which just happens to be my favorite subgenre.
Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition
I prefer the original but this is one of the most popular, highly rated RPGs of all time.
Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition
Maybe the best known D&D campaign of all time turns out to be an all time classic video game as well.
The Temple of Elemental Evil

These are the series that started it all.
All the Might and Magic games are great but VI is the best in the series and one of my very favorites.
Might and Magic 6-pack
If I had to pick the greatest RPG of all time this might very well be it. All the Wizardry games are great.
Wizardry 8
Ultima is one of the most iconic, classic RPG series around. Lots of good games in the series but IV is the best.
Ultima™ IV: Quest of the Avatar
Pure dungeon crawls
My very favorite type of game, I play as many of them as I can find.
Diablo is the original dungeon crawler series. I loved the first game but D2 is the most iconic dungeon crawler of all time.
Diablo II: Resurrected
Very cool party based dungeon crawler with an interesting character customization system. Has several expansions available as well.
Titan Quest Anniversary Edition
The third game in this series can be skipped but the first two are great, absolute classic dungeon crawls.
Dungeon Siege Collection
This free online RPG can be played with a group or solo. Tons to see and do, with new content constantly being added.
Path of Exile
Pretty much exact copies of DIablo with brighter colors, these games are super fun with plenty of loot and monsters. This package comes with all 4 games in the series.
FATE: The Complete Adventure
I really liked the original Torchlight. Didn't care as much for the two sequels but this one was a lot of fun.

These don't fall into any of the other categories but are still great great games.
Later games in the series are more popular but I love the original post-apocalyptic game.
Fallout
The first game in the series has an epic story and compelling gameplay. Second game is worth playing too, but skip the third installment.
Dragon Age™: Origins - Ultimate Edition
A bit more modern but a great throwback to the old school games. Challenging but very fun.
