I've played a whole lot of RPGs in my life, and the Switch is probably the best RPG console of all time. Here are my favorites on the system.
Probably the best RPG on the system and maybe the best game in a fantastic series.
Dragon Quest XI
If you're a gameplay guy like me and don't really care about killer graphics or “story” this is a must play.
Dungeon Encounters
Kind of like an offline MMO, this game is huge and has tons of stuff to do. Really really fun.
9th Dawn III
The video game version of my all time favorite board game. It had some UI issues but it was still massively fun and had tons of content.
Gloomhaven Mercenaries Edition
Oh man, total old school RPG without all the old school game annoyances. Loved this game, can't wait for the second.
Legends of Amberland
Very charming game with an old school feel to it. Reminded me of the classic Lunar games.
Ara Fell Enhanced Edition
Fantastic game, very dark, very compelling story and great gameplay. One of the best on the system.
Undernauts: Labyrinth of Yomi
This game is an exact copy of the Etrian Odyssey games. And I mean exact. Like I'm surprised they didn't get sued exact. Great game though!
Infinite Adventures
Dungeon crawling goodness with lots of customizations, daily missions, challenge levels, and tons of content.
Moonshades
I didn't care for the sequel but this game was pretty fun. Like a Saga game you have 8 different characters you play as through the game.
Octopath Traveler
THE original party-based RPG this game is still massively fun all these years later. This updated version takes some of the old school pain out of the game while leaving the core gameplay intact.
Wizardry Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord
Fire Emblem is probably my all time favorite series but sadly the Switch entries are the worst in the series. This game is still worth playing though.
Fire Emblem Engage
If you've never played these here's your chance to play some of the best, most classic games of all-time.
Final Fantasy I-VI Pixel Remaster Collection
Another old school style game with lots of customization, flying battle suits and lots of world to explore.
Chained Echoes
The first two games in this classic series have been remastered and are still a ton of fun.
