San Francisco’s museum scene is one of my favorite things about the city. Whether I’m in the mood for art, science, culture, or something quirky, these are the museums I always recommend, and personally love, for different reasons.
This is my go-to museum when I want to feel creatively inspired. I never see the same thing twice, and the building alone is worth the visit.
San Francisco Museum of Modern Art
I love how this museum makes learning feel effortless. Walking from an aquarium to a rainforest to a planetarium in one place never gets old.
California Academy of Sciences
This one feels like a full experience, art, architecture, and nature. I always head up to the observation tower for the view afterward.
de Young Museum
Whenever I want something calm and thoughtful, this is where I go. The collections are stunning, and it’s one of the most peaceful museums in the city.
Asian Art Museum
This museum brings out my inner kid every time. I love how interactive everything is, you’re encouraged to touch, experiment, and play.
Exploratorium
Even if you’re not a huge Disney fan, this museum surprised me. It’s beautifully curated and really inspiring if you love creativity and storytelling.
The Walt Disney Family Museum
I always recommend this to visitors because it’s so uniquely San Francisco, and it’s free. Seeing the cable system in action is genuinely fascinating.
Cable Car Museum
This place is pure nostalgia. I love popping in to play vintage arcade games and soak up the old-school charm near the waterfront.

This museum feels elegant and timeless. I like coming here when I want a quieter art day with classical pieces and ocean views.
Legion of Honor
I appreciate how modern and thought-provoking the exhibits are here. It’s one of those museums that always makes me reflect and learn something new.
The Contemporary Jewish Museum
Small but incredibly powerful. I found this museum deeply moving and important for understanding San Francisco’s cultural history.
glbt historical society Museum
This is one of the most meaningful museums in the city for me. The storytelling through art and history is both emotional and inspiring.
Museum of the African Diaspora
I like this one for a quick, interesting stop. It’s perfect if you’re walking along Market Street and want to learn about the city’s transit history
San Francisco Railway Museum
This is where I go when I want to see something bold and unconventional. The exhibits often challenge perspectives in the best way.
Yerba Buena Center for the Arts
I enjoy how unexpectedly diverse this museum is. It’s a quieter spot with beautiful global art that feels like a hidden gem.
