I was inspired to learn about excellence by a blog post. It blew my mind to think that it tied up all my interests in one neat idea and made my eclectic bookshelf make sense.
I did pick up this book because of the way the cover is designed. Which is a good sign considering the subject. A fascinating look at the influence of dress and design in daily life and the changing nature of female life.
The Lost Art of Dress: Women Who Styled America
The idea of being sensitive has not got the best reputation. This put me off doing anything about it. Until I came across this book which is a more accurate depiction of the reality of sensory overload.
The Highly Sensitive Person
It has taken me ten years to read this book. I can't say that it has been the most enjoyable read but the information contained in it is worth the sometimes heavy nature of the writing.
Thinking, Fast and Slow
I wanted to learn about decision making and this was the stand out book. A good overview of the research.
Nudge: Improving Decisions on Health & Wealth
A wordy start but worth it once you get into it. Hood for understanding the why of aesthetics in space design.
The poetics of space
I would recommend this book even to people who have no interest in design. It’s that good. The author puts words to all those niggly little questions and explains why it just doesn’t work.
The Design of Everyday Things
This was another one I struggled to get into. I came back to it after I read an article on the same topic and wanted more information.
The Pattern Seekers: Autism and Invention
Another book on how to make decisions. It introduced me to the concept of expected value which has been very useful. It can be lacking in nuance, defining people in very black and whote terms but nonetheless is a good resource for thinking anout lett...
Quit: The Power of Knowing When to Walk Away
Sometimes excellence can seem really far away. I didn't learn a lot of practical skills growing up and as a result, it can feel like I'm starting from scratch. When I'm staring at a big mess, it can be really overwhelming and thats where this book co...
How to Keep House While Drowning: A Guide
This is the book that introduced me to the idea of making choices about how much stuff you have. The book covers how to decide what to keep and what to let go in a very gentle and non judgmental way.
The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up
I read this when I started childminding. It worked really well. Now that my nephew is three, I'm reading it again to help me understand how to interact with him.
