My first flat happened at 11pm on a Tuesday in January. I sat there for 90 minutes waiting for roadside assistance because I had nothing in my trunk. Never again.

After my first breakdown I threw a blanket and some granola bars in my trunk and called it a day. That was embarrassingly inadequate. Here's what an actual prepared trunk looks like.

Dead battery in a parking garage at 6am before a flight. That was my wake up call. Now I carry a jump starter smaller than my wallet and I've used it three times for other people.

Calling roadside assistance means waiting an hour minimum. I learned to patch my own tire in a Walmart parking lot using a YouTube video and these supplies. Drove home fine.

Being invisible on the shoulder of a highway at night is terrifying. I stood behind my car waving my phone flashlight like an idiot during my first breakdown. These make sure that never happens again.

My second flat happened in February. Bare hands on cold metal, kneeling in slush, wind cutting through my jacket. I was completely unprepared for the weather part of the emergency.

My phone died during my first breakdown because I'd been streaming music all day. No phone means no GPS, no roadside assistance call, no way to tell anyone where you are. That scared me more than the flat.
