Although you might assume that all Southern cuisine is the same, there are actually a lot of distinct regions with unique culinary traditions. In Kentucky, for instance, the traditional foods of the Appalachian mountain region differ greatly from those of the western portion of the state. For this reason, unless you are familiar with Appalachian recipes, you cannot fully understand Southern cooking.
