Mountain Views & Blue Ridge Horizons
Layer upon layer, the Blue Ridge Mountains seem to change with the light, weather and seasons. From familiar overlooks to mountaintop views, these photographs capture some of the horizons that have made me stop and look a little longer.
Layer upon layer, the mountains fade from green to blue toward the horizon—a classic Blue Ridge view and one that never seems quite the same twice.

From 3,100 feet atop Jump Off Rock in Laurel Park, the view opens across the ridges of Western North Carolina.

From the 2,783-foot summit of Big Glassy Mountain in Flat Rock, trees give way to mountains, sky and a view worth lingering over.

Sometimes the mountains aren't the whole show. Clouds gather overhead while the Blue Ridge quietly stretches beneath them.

Between autumn color and winter snow comes the quieter “Season of Sticks,” when bare branches reveal shapes and views hidden during leafier months.

Mountain laurel and Catawba rhododendron add their own beauty to the overlooks along the Blue Ridge Parkway, especially around Craggy Gardens.

Waterfalls & Mountain Waters
Follow the sound of rushing water through Western North Carolina. Water shapes the landscape, tumbling over granite faces, gathering in mountain streams and hiding at the end of forest trails. Some falls are easy to reach; others make you work for th...
Looking Glass Falls makes quite an entrance, plunging about 60 feet beside the road through Pisgah National Forest near Brevard.

Follow the water. Mountain streams wind through the forest, sometimes quietly and sometimes tumbling toward the next cascade.

Only about 12 feet high, Hooker Falls proves a waterfall doesn't need height to have character. Its broad cascade spills into a pool long enjoyed for summer swimming.

Continue along the Little River and the landscape gets considerably taller: three distinct tiers combine to create the 120-foot Triple Falls.

Sometimes the trail provides the perfect frame. Autumn foliage surrounds a distant view of High Falls cascading through DuPont State Recreational Forest.
High Falls DuPont State Forest Autumn Postcard
Take the spur from the main trail and High Falls becomes a very different experience, with 125 feet of water descending the granite face before you.

Where rushing mountain water slows to a quiet pool, autumn leaves and reflections get a chance to linger.
The walk to 90-foot Pearson's Falls is part of its appeal—a peaceful trail following a spring-fed stream through the foothills between Saluda and Tryon.

Reaching 50-foot, multi-tiered Little Bradley Falls takes a little more effort, with stream crossings along the trail through the Green River Game Lands near Saluda.

Hickory Nut Falls drops 404 feet down the mountainside at Chimney Rock State Park. I photographed it from below shortly after the park reopened on June 27, 2025, nine months after Hurricane Helene devastated Chimney Rock and surrounding communities.

Along the Trail
Not every memorable view is waiting at the destination. Sometimes it's the forest overhead, autumn color along the path, or a distant mountain glimpsed between the trees that becomes the photograph and the memory.
““I'm an idealist. I don't know where I'm going, but I'm on my way.” Somehow Sandburg's words feel especially fitting when the trail ahead disappears into the trees.

There's a reason to look up as well as down. Autumn color fills the canopy overhead while the trail continues beneath it.
After climbing through the forest, Bearwallow Mountain has a rather unexpected welcome: cattle grazing across the grassy bald, sometimes right alongside the trail.

Not every memorable view waits at the summit or the end of a trail. Beyond the mountain views and waterfalls are the places, landmarks, wildlife and stories that give Western North Carolina its character. Some are still here to discover; others have ...
Meet a few residents of Connemara Farms: Nubian, Saanen and Toggenburg dairy goats, part of the herd at the Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site in Flat Rock.
There's more than one way to reach the top of Chimney Rock. Climb the stairs or ride the elevator through the mountain, then step out onto the 315-foot granite monolith overlooking Hickory Nut Gorge.

Two landmarks share one photograph: Chimney Rock rises beyond the gardens of the Lake Lure Flowering Bridge in July 2024, just months before Hurricane Helene changed this familiar view.

Flowers spilled across a bridge once built for traffic, transformed by volunteers into a garden over the Rocky Broad River. Photographed in July 2024, this was the Flowering Bridge in its final summer before Hurricane Helene.

Thirty gardens turned the old 1925 bridge into something entirely unexpected—a place to wander, discover and stop among the flowers. This July 2024 photograph preserves one view of a beloved landmark that is now part of Lake Lure's history.
