My room felt like a closet until I hung one oversized mirror on the wall opposite my window — suddenly the whole room opened up like someone knocked out a wall.

Once I stopped buying single-purpose furniture, I got back about 30% of my floor space. Every piece in a small room needs to earn its spot or it's gone.

Hanging curtains at the ceiling instead of right above the window was the cheapest trick that made the most dramatic difference. People kept asking if I had higher ceilings than other units in my building.

Clutter was the real enemy the whole time. Once I got everything off the floor and out of sight, the room looked bigger even before I changed anything else.

Wanted greenery but couldn't sacrifice any surface area — wall-mounted and hanging planters let me bring in plants without losing a single inch of usable space.

Picked the wrong rug size my first try and it made the room feel chopped in half. Getting the proportions right was the last piece that pulled everything together.
