Our landlord made it very clear: no holes, no exceptions. These pressure-mounted gates hold tight without leaving anything behind when you take them down.

Pressure mounts are great for doorways, but the top of the stairs is a different conversation. I wasn't willing to gamble there. These bolt in solid but use small anchor points that are easy to patch later.

Our kitchen opens into the living room with a 60-inch gap and standard gates looked at it and laughed. Finding wide gates that don't wobble in the middle took way too long.

Standard gates made our narrow hallway feel like an obstacle course. Retractable ones roll up flush against the wall and suddenly the hallway exists again when the kids are napping.

Even the best pressure-mounted gate can leave scuff marks or small dents if you skip the protective pads. Learned that one the expensive way in our first apartment.

Gates solve the safety problem but create new annoyances. These extras fixed the daily frustrations I didn't expect, like tripping in the dark and fighting with latches while carrying groceries.
