Anything under six hours and mediocre earbuds will do. But once you cross into overnight transatlantic territory, weak ANC makes you want to scream into a pillow. These are the ones I actually trust for 8+ hour flights.

Not everyone wants to drop $250 on earbuds they might lose in a seat pocket. I tested cheaper options on short domestic hops and a few of them genuinely surprised me.

The real test isn't how they sound during a movie. It's whether you can smash your head against a window pillow and sleep without them drilling into your ear canal. Comfort separates good from great here.

Nothing worse than ANC dying somewhere over the Atlantic with four hours left. I started tracking actual battery performance after getting burned on a flight to Tokyo with dead earbuds and no backup.

Half my flights are spent on work calls the second we land, and sometimes on the tarmac before takeoff. Microphone quality matters as much as noise canceling when your boss can hear every gate announcement.

Stock earbuds tips are fine for the gym. At altitude, cabin pressure changes everything. Swapping tips and adding a couple of accessories made a bigger difference than I expected.

Sometimes earbuds just don't cut it, especially on 12+ hour flights where my ears need a break. I rotate between buds and cans depending on the route, and these are the over-ears that earn bag space.
