items It's good to be prepared on short hikes just as well as long hikes or overnight trips! I have found I prefer to carry a small pack with these few items instead of regretting that I don't have something half way through the hike.
For a day hike, I don't need more than a 20L or 24L pack. Sometimes I can get away with one smaller!
