Tijuca's trails look Instagram-friendly until you're sliding down wet rocks in running shoes. I ate dirt twice on Pico da Tijuca before I wised up and invested in actual grip.

Cotton is your enemy in a tropical rainforest. I learned this the gross, chafing way on my first Tijuca hike when my t-shirt weighed about five pounds by the summit.

There are zero water fountains inside Tijuca. I ran out of water halfway through my first hike and spent the rest of it fantasizing about the coconut water vendors on Ipanema.

Tijuca will hit you with blazing sun and a torrential downpour within the same hour. My first hike started cloudless and ended with me sheltering under a banana leaf like a cartoon character.

Tijuca has over 100 trails and cell service drops to zero in most of the forest. I took a wrong turn near Bom Retiro and added two hours to what should have been a three-hour loop.

These aren't survival items but they turned a good hike into something I still talk about at dinner parties. Little luxuries that weigh almost nothing but made a huge difference.
