Everyone says go to Beco do Batman but nobody tells you which entrance to use or what time to show up before it gets packed with tour groups blocking every photo angle.

The stuff two blocks away from Beco do Batman is honestly better than the main alley. Fewer people noticed these walls and the artists had more space to work with.

I did three different tours across my visits and the quality gap between them was wild. One was incredible, one was fine, one I wanted to leave halfway through.

You will get hot and tired walking Vila Madalena's hills. Having a plan for where to refuel saved me from buying overpriced water from random convenience stores three times.

Packed way too much camera gear my first trip and regretted it by noon. Second trip I stripped it down to three things and got better shots with less back pain.

Vila Madalena is hilly, the sidewalks are uneven, and Sao Paulo heat is no joke. I watched a tourist in platform sandals nearly twist her ankle on the cobblestones within five minutes.

When the sun gets brutal around 1 PM, duck into an air-conditioned gallery for twenty minutes. Some of these feature the same artists whose work covers the outdoor walls.

Timing makes or breaks this walk. I went on a holiday weekend once and could barely see the walls through the crowds. Went on a Tuesday morning and had entire alleys to myself.

Sao Paulo is not dangerous if you pay attention, but I made a few rookie mistakes my first visit that I really wish someone had warned me about beforehand.

After five hours on your feet, you need a real meal and a cold drink. Vila Madalena has incredible restaurants within walking distance of the art streets, so don't leave the neighborhood.
