My instructor told me the moves only stick if you drill them weekly. I was shadow boxing in my living room like a weirdo until I got proper gear and honestly the difference in my confidence was immediate.

The first time I tried a front kick in class my hip flexor screamed at me for three days. Building leg strength outside of class made the actual techniques so much easier to execute when it counted.

My self defense instructor said something that stuck with me. The best fight is the one you never have. These are the things I carry so hopefully I never need to use what I learned in class.

When someone grabbed my wrist in class to demonstrate an escape, I realized my grip strength was basically nonexistent. Spent two months fixing that and now I can actually break a hold without panicking.

Nobody warned me that practicing self defense moves at 38 would make me feel 58 the next day. Recovery gear turned out to be just as important as the training gear itself.

Showed up to my first class in regular leggings and a cotton shirt. By minute ten I was soaked, overheating, and my pants were sliding down during every kick. Never again.

Taking a self defense class made me notice every weak point in my own house. Came home after the first session and immediately started fixing things I'd ignored for years.

Half of self defense is mental. My hands used to shake just thinking about confrontation. These are the things that helped me build the kind of calm confidence that makes you less of a target in the first place.

Convinced my best friend to train with me after she had a scare in a parking lot. Practicing with another person makes every technique feel real in a way solo drills never will.
