Pack & Hydration (My Trail Setup)

What I wear when I want to crush miles without destroying my feet or getting fried by the sun.

You don't need a massive rig for a day hike. A sleek 15-30-liter pack is my sweet spot. Look for one with mesh back ventilation so your shirt doesn't get completely soaked with sweat by noon.

Honestly, pulling a water bottle out of your side pocket every ten minutes is annoying. I swear by a hydration bladder. Having that straw right on my shoulder strap means I actually stay hydrated while moving.

If I'm not using a bladder, I bring a vacuum-insulated bottle. There is nothing better than hitting a scenic viewpoint and taking a massive gulp of ice-cold water, even when it’s baking hot outside.

Trail Wear & Comfort (Fast and Light)

Staying hydrated and comfortable is the name of the game. This is how I carry my water and gear without feeling weighed down.

Since we aren't carrying 40 pounds of camp gear, heavy boots are overkill. I love lightweight trail runners or low-cut hiking shoes. They breathe incredibly well, and my legs don't feel like lead at the end of the day.

I used to just slather on sunscreen, but these lightweight sun hoodies are a total game-changer. They block UV rays, keep you cool, and you don't get that sticky, greasy sunscreen feeling all day.

A must-have for those exposed ridge walks. Polarized lenses are crucial because they cut out the glare from rocks and water, saving you from a brutal squint-headache later.

Fuel & Trail Snacks (Keep the Energy Up)

No stoves needed here. This is my go-to stash of high-energy snacks and electrolytes to keep me moving from trailhead to summit.

Ditch the heavy meals. I pack energy gels, beef jerky, honey stinger waffles, and classic trail mix (or "GORP" - Good Old Raisins and Peanuts). You want stuff you can eat on the go to keep your engine running.

Just drinking straight water when you're sweating bullets can deplete your salts and cause crazy leg cramps. I always dump a Liquid I.V. or Nuun tablet into my water to stay sharp.

The Safety Net (Just in Case)

Even on a short day hike, things can happen. These are the lightweight safety essentials I always keep in the bottom of my pack, because being prepared is always cool.

Keep it simple since it's just a day trip. Band-aids, antiseptic wipes, and some Moleskin are non-negotiable. If you start feeling a hot spot on your heel, slap that Moleskin on immediately before it ruins your hike.

Do not rely on cell service up in the canyons—it will vanish. I always download my route completely offline before leaving the trailhead. Just make sure your phone is fully charged!

It might be 85 degrees at the trailhead, but the top of the mountain can be windy and freezing. This super thin jacket packs down to the size of an apple and protects you from sudden wind chills.
