Africa is huge, and there are far too many incredible places to squeeze into one bucket list. So instead of giving you the usual “10 best African destinations”, I've put together the trips that genuinely make me want to pack a bag. Some I've experien...

🇳🇦 Namibia — The Road Trip I'd Never Get Tired Of

The Namibia experience that belongs on almost every first-time itinerary — enormous red dunes, white salt pans and landscapes that don't quite look real.

Go early if you can. The light is beautiful, temperatures are more manageable, and you'll avoid some of the harsh midday heat. Don't forget water, sun protection and something to cover your camera from the sand.

What I'd Pack

Namibia doesn't require a suitcase full of fancy gear. I'd pack practical, hard-working essentials that make long drives, dusty roads, hot days and cool mornings much easier. These are the things I'd want within reach on a Namibia road trip.

A good reusable water bottle is one of those simple things you'll use constantly in Namibia.Keep water in the vehicle whenever you're travelling between destinations. A larger insulated bottle is especially useful on hot driving days.

When you're travelling through remote areas, keeping your phone and camera batteries charged matters. Choose one with enough capacity to recharge your phone more than once. I’d also keep a charging cable in the car permanently.

Much more useful than you might expect — especially when you're staying at campsites or moving around after dark. Note: Keep it somewhere easily accessible rather than buried at the bottom of your luggage. Namibia gets properly dark away from towns.

Namibia can give you sunshine, chilly mornings and surprisingly cold evenings — sometimes all in the same day. Note: Think layers rather than one heavy jacket. A fleece or lightweight jacket, long-sleeved shirt and T-shirt give you much more flexibil...

Good shoes will get far more use than pretty ones on a Namibia road trip. Note: Choose something comfortable for walking on sand, gravel and rocky terrain. Break them in before your trip.

The Namibian sun is no joke. A good hat is practical travel gear, not just a fashion accessory. Note: A secure, breathable hat with decent sun coverage is ideal, especially when you're spending hours outdoors.

Bright desert landscapes and strong sunlight make good sunglasses essential. Note: Polarised lenses can also help reduce glare when you're driving, particularly around bright sand and water.

Sun protection belongs in your day bag every single day in Namibia. Note: Don't forget the often-missed areas: ears, neck, hands and the tops of your feet if you're wearing sandals.

Not every part of Namibia has the same insect situation, but repellent is one of those things I'd rather have than need. Note: It's particularly useful when you're spending evenings outdoors or travelling through greener northern regions.

A little detergent and a travel clothesline can save space when you're travelling for several days. Note: Namibia road trips can be long, so washing a few items along the way means you don't need to pack your entire wardrobe.
Travel Laundry Kit

One of the least glamorous things you'll pack — and one of the most useful. Note: Keep a few reusable or biodegradable bags in the vehicle for snack wrappers, tissues and other small rubbish. It keeps the rental car much tidier.

Road trips aren't always glamorous. These are small comforts you'll be very happy to have. Note: Keep a pack in the day bag and another in the vehicle. Don't assume you'll always find a convenient shop or rest stop when you need one.

Dust is part of the Namibia experience — unfortunately, it also loves cameras. Note: Pack a blower, lens cloth and cleaning supplies. Avoid changing lenses unnecessarily on dusty roads.

The Road That Raised Me

Namibia isn't just a destination on my travel list. I grew up in Windhoek, and some of my earliest travel memories were made on these roads.
