Brought a plastic bag of ice to my first picnic. By the time we sat down, everything was floating in warm water and my sandwiches were mush. Never again.

Sat on a regular throw blanket once at a park after morning dew. Stood up with a completely wet backside and pretended nothing happened for three hours. Fixed that problem permanently.

Nothing ruins a picnic faster than opening your tote and finding salad dressing everywhere. I lost a good canvas bag learning this lesson.

Watched a full glass of sangria tip into the grass in slow motion. Everyone stared. The wine was gone and the glass almost shattered. Switched to unbreakable everything after that.

Tried to slice cheese with a butter knife on a paper plate once. Ended up with cheese chunks and a ripped plate. A little prep gear changed everything.

Spent an entire afternoon swatting flies away from food and got sunburned shoulders because I forgot sunscreen. Two problems, both completely avoidable.

Played music off a phone speaker once. Tinny, quiet, and everyone pretended they could hear it. A small speaker changed the entire vibe without taking up real estate in my bag.

My knees and back started protesting ground-level picnics around age 30. Getting up after an hour felt like a whole workout. Found seats that fold small enough to actually bring.

Used to show up with four random plastic bags and spend ten minutes digging for the cheese. A proper picnic bag means you grab one thing and walk out the door.

The random small stuff you don't think about until you're already at the park going ‘does anyone have a.’ — now I keep all of these in my picnic kit permanently.
