My recently read books that I think we should read and discuss. Some are series that I am in the midst of and some are one off reads. All of them are books I would recommend to a friend to read (and have for the most part!) Have you read? Let's c...

Book Series

Books in a series that I think you should read all of!

The first book in this series.  I've been listening to it on Audible and it's so great!
Finlay Donovan Is Killing It: A Novel

Lindsay Newton profile picture
A combination of mature Harry Potter, Divergent, Hunger Games and A Few Good Men.  It's a genre all of it's own and a must read series!
Fourth Wing

Book two in this series did live up to the hype of the first one.  It made me uncomfortable and confused at times and dragged on way too long.  I don't like leaving anything but a positive book review, but this could be a skip. I recommend reading it to finish out the series as a necessary ending to the story, but it's tough.
The Heir Affair (The Royal We, 2) - Books

This entire series was fun and fast.  It was relevant giving that we are living in the era of Wills and Harry, but whimsical in that it's written as if America becaome a monarchy instead of a democracy.  It's soapy but has historical details for any history nerds like me.  You form love hate relationships for the characters and never want the series to end.
American Royals

Hear me out on this one - it's interesting.  A bit like Game of Thrones and definitely a fantasy read.  It may not be your favorite book but read it and get through it. This book is a must read to get into the other books that follow it in the series, which we MUST discuss next!
A Court of Thorns and Roses

Book two in the ACOTAR series and if you have stuck with the series so far, I hope that you're as mind blown as I am by now. Everything is starting to change and it is getting SO GOOD.  I can't say too much without giving a lot away, but READ IT!
A Court of Mist and Fury

Book Three in the ACOTAR series and I am all in at this point.  My feelings on certain characters are completely changed and I am passionately involved in particular relationships.  The evolution of story lines and personal development of characters is powerful and the metaphors are tremendous!
A Court of Wings and Ruin

This is a mini novel that ties two story lines together.  While it seems easy to skip, I recommend reading it so that details do not get lost in the mix!
A Court of Frost and Starlight

This book changes the point of view from which the story is being told and an entirely new perspective comes into play to close out the series.  It's a powerful way to finish the ACOTAR series and it is emotional and full of female enegery.  What I love most about her writing is that she shows how truly amazing and strong women are.
A Court of Silver Flames

The fourth book in this delightful series did not disappoint!  It wrapped up most of the open ends but also left us hanging with potential for more - please let there be more!
Finlay Donovan Rolls the Dice: A Novel

Book three in this delightful little series was quite possibly the best one in my humble opinion. It had the biggest twists so far and they just kept coming.  I can't say much more without giving too much away, but I really loved this one!
Finlay Donovan Jumps the Gun: Bestseller

Thrillers

Thriller and mystery type books.  Some are dark and some may be a little on the lighter side, either way they're all good.

I'm a little late to the party on this one, but it lived up to the hype.  Truth be told, it made me more sad than anything.  I know it's meant to be a thriller, but it really was a story of deep loss on many levels to me and figuring out how to navigate those losses and form new familial bonds.
The Last Thing He Told Me

Lindsay Newton profile picture
A great female driven mystery.  It's modern with a twist and has a podcast and flashbacks.  A lot of different things going on but they all combine to make a really interesting and compelling story.
The Villa: A Novel

Lindsay Newton profile picture
This is not a political thriller, despite the title.  It's juicy and a quick read!
The Senator's Wife: A Novel

Lindsay Newton profile picture
This was darker than I expected but it led me to more of her books.  You need to be steely to read her books, but they're so well written.
None of This Is True: A Novel

Lindsay Newton profile picture
Another great Lisa Jewell book, but also dark.  It involves children, so be warned.  British mysteries get me so I am a sucker for them.  Her writing style is brilliant and her twists are powerful.  She keeps you guessing until the very end.
Then She Was Gone: A Novel

Lindsay Newton profile picture
A juicy thriller novel with a little hint of cheesiness.  This was my first dip back into more thrillers and it was the perfect entrance point with just the right amount of thrill and just enough of a hint of eye roll.
The Last Mrs. Parrish: A Novel

This was such a quick read and a fun one.  It was a murder mystery with a super modern twist - a podcast and a love triangle. Fun little read for anyone who likes drama, romance and murder!
Listen for the Lie: A Novel

This book has been getting a lot of hype and it was very interesting, but it was not my favorite.  It felt a little predictable and the ending was, dare I say, cheesy?  Listen, people are loving it, so give a read and let me know what you think!
First Lie Wins: Reese's Book Club Pick (A Novel)

Romantic

Let's call these the romcoms of novels shall we?

Lindsay Newton profile picture
This was a quick and easy read - although the title is definitely misleading.  I think it needs a different title entirely.  I love the story and think this is romcom worthy.  Emily Henry is the queen of the romcom story and she delivered!
Beach Read

An Elin Hildenbrand gem.  It tells the story of five women going through five different circumstances and will make you want to plan your own five star weekend.  This was a fly-through read that was so hard to put down.
The Five-Star Weekend

A cute and class Emily Henry tale about a couple scorned by their exes.
Funny Story

Other

And here is where all of the other books that I can't quite categorize go.  However, you should still read them!

A fun memoir style tale of a woman's life in early 20th century New York City as told to her lover's daughter.  It was a bit too long and wordy and could have been shorted significantly, but the heart was in the right place.
City of Girls

One of the best books of all time, dare I say. Kristin Hannah does historical fiction better than no one else, and this book is such a beautiful example of this. It speaks to the power of women, sisterhood and perseverance. I cannot recommend this...
The Nightingale: A Novel

My favorite read of 2024.  So well written and incredible!
Hello Beautiful (Oprah's Book Club): A Novel

A tale about vampires, but also about the love between best friends.

Another great read by Ann Napolitano.  A beautiful story about a young survivor of a plane crash and his life as he grapples with his life after the plane.
Dear Edward: A Novel
