A soft top surfboard is the best choice for a beginner surfer. They are more stable and float much easier. I'd suggest starting with a 6-foot-long board. Going too large initially can make it significantly more challenging to maintain control.

A swimsuit is much more than just clothing. It keeps you warm when surfing and provides protection when something goes wrong. In other words, a good quality swimsuit is necessary. I had this type as my first, and I still use it to this day.

Wax provides extra grip on your board. Waxing your surfboard isn't really necessary, but once you've done it one time, you really feel the difference. Especially if you are a beginner, you'll be able to stay on your board a lot longer.
