I used to buy cheap feeders and then rig up homemade moats with bottle caps and wire. They leaked, they fell, and ants still got through. These feeders have moats built right into the design, so you fill the reservoir with water and ants literally ca...

Already have a feeder you love but ants found it? Same. I didn't want to replace my grandmother's old feeder, so I added these moats above it on the hanging wire. Problem solved without buying a whole new setup.

Here's what nobody told me for two years. Leaky feeders drip nectar down the pole and onto the ground, and that sugar trail is basically a GPS signal for every ant colony in your yard. Fixing the leak fixed 80% of my ant problem.

Some people suggest spraying insecticide near feeders and that makes me cringe. Hummingbirds weigh less than a nickel. These are non-toxic ways I keep ants away from the general feeder area without putting birds at risk.

Where you hang your feeder matters more than I realized. I had mine dangling from a tree branch and ants were using the branch like a highway. Moving to a freestanding pole with a smooth surface cut my ant visits by half before I even added a moat.

Dirty feeders ferment fast, and fermented nectar smells stronger, which attracts more ants and more problems. Keeping things clean was the last piece of the puzzle I was missing. Fresh nectar plus a moat equals an ant-free feeder, finally.
