Maryland's history with the B&O railroad makes it an ideal place for little train lovers. (If you're an adult train lover, this is for you too. We won't tell.)
Map
Best and largest model train set-up around. Just know the model trains are on the 3rd floor and sometimes the elevator is out of service. If you go the first full weekend in October, you can pair your museum visit with a real train ride.
Brunswick Heritage Museum
Don't miss letting your kid ring the bell on the train platform. Has an HO model of the first 13 miles of the BO railroad.
B&O Ellicott City Station Museum
The engine on display outside the museum is a beauty. Don't skip the caboose. Real trains go by on the tracks next to the museum.
Gaithersburg Community Museum
Don't miss the model train. (It's not in the main room.) Typically holds an openhouse on the first Saturday of the month. Usually closed on other days.
Silver Spring B&O Railroad Station
Kids can enjoy trainspotting from the museum's caboose. After you visit the railroad museum, you might want to check out the Old Town Bowie Welcome Center that's next door for more kid's activities.
Bowie Railroad Museum
The farmer's market is next to a MARC station, which makes it a great place for trainspotting.
