Looking for adventures and activities near Scranton? My husband and I LOVE to take our two kids places, especially in the summer. We're always looking for fun things to do and to get them outside more. These are my must-see attractions, outdoor spots, family-friendly activities, and hidden gems in the area. This list is your go-to guide for fun things to do close to home or while visiting on vacation!
I've taken my kids here many times, especially when they were toddlere. Let's face it, there's something about trains that little kids love!
🌟Great for anyone who loves trains - you can get up close to historic steam locomotives, climb aboard some of them, and even ring a locomotive bell.
🌟The site includes a historic roundhouse, turntable, and museum exhibits.
Steamtown National Historic Site
My favorite part about this place is honestly the inside! Train rides are cool of course, but looking at all the stuff inside the museum is what peaks my interest.
🌟Offers rides on restored vintage trolleys - a fun, nostalgic way to experience local history.
🌟Good for relaxed outing, and especially fun if you like trains/transportation or have kids.
The Electric City Trolley Museum
This park is super close to my house and a great place to get some energy out. It's gorgeous, there's plenty of places to walk, and although you're getting in some excercise, it's still very relaxing.
🌟Nay Aug Park is a big urban-nature escape: with a gorge, waterfalls (Nay Aug Falls), hiking trails, and plenty of green space - nice for walking, relaxing, or family outings
🌟Drive through Christmas display around the holidays with a horse and buggy also!
Nay Aug Park
This is an inexpensive place to take your family for a little afternoon history lesson. They change exhibits frequently and add seasonal things as well. They even did “The Office” exhibit this year which was definitely a fav.
🌟The Everhart Museum is located in/near Nay Aug Park - offers art, natural history, and science exhibits if you want a mix of nature + culture.
Everhart Museum
It's chilly under there, but my kids loved throwing on a head lamp and wandering through. They ask about this at least once a year!
🌟Gives a real peek into the region's coal-mining history - you actually go underground into a former coal mine.
🌟Especially neat if you like history or want to teach kids about local heritage.
Lackawanna Coal Mine Tour
This is definitely an interesting place to visit at least once if you're in the area. History amazes me, and this didn't disappoint.
🌟Historic blast furnaces from the 1800's - a nice spot for a short history-oriented outing.
🌟Gives a sense of Scranton's industrial past, especially if you enjoy learning about how things used to work.
Scranton Iron Furnaces
I can access this very close to my house. I love walking this trail because it's quiet and the scenery is amazing!
🌟A long trail along the river - great for walking, jogging, biking, or just getting outside and enjoying some calm scenery.
🌟Since there are multiple trailheads in Scranton, it's pretty accessible no matter where you are in town.
Lackawanna River Heritage Trail
I'm a Met's fan… until the end of time, but I've definitely enjoyed many games here with friends and family. They do offer season tickets and are super inexpensive!
🌟If you like sports, seeing a game at PNC Field - home of the AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders - can be a fun, affordable outing.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Moosic RailRiders: PNC Field
This has been under construction for awhile, but it's a gorgeous place to visit and enjoy a peaceful walk around the lake. It can get busy at times, but that's just because it's such a great place to visit!
🌟The loop trail around the lake (approx. 3.5 miles) is perfect for a peaceful walk or jog.
🌟It's especially nice in fall for foliage reflections on the water - great if you want an easy nature escape without leaving town.
Lake Scranton Trail
I'm not a winter season person, but give me ALL the summer fun. My kids love going here. The waterpark is fantastic. I've also been to more concerts here than I can count!
🌟In winter you can ski, snowboard, or snow-tube.
🌟In warm months you can visit the water-park which includes a lazy river, slides, and seasonal attractions that make it a fun summer outing.
🌟The resort also has concerts/events throughout the summer season.
Montage Mountain Resorts
Theater. Yes please! I'm a Broadway lover and this place DOES NOT disappoint with their entertainment.
🌟Great if you're in the mood for a show - the theater hosts musicals, concerts, plays, and other performances.
🌟This is also a good indoor option if weather isn't cooperating - architecture + arts + events in one historic building.
Scranton Cultural Center at the Masonic Temple
Another local history lesson and perfect place to spend an afternoon.
🌟Offers insight into the region's coal-mining history - what coal mining meant to this area, how people lived/worked, etc.
🌟Good if you enjoy history and want more than just “fun” - this is educational and gives context to local heritage.
