Livestream Guitar on Twitch: Setup Guide

Purple Star emoji 14 items
Have you ever wanted to start streaming your guitar playing live on Twitch with studio-level audio quality? This list features some of the equipment that you'll need in order to get started. I use all of these things myself for my own Twitch livestre...

The Line 6 Helix LT is the core of this entire setup. It plugs into your PC via USB, and in OBS you'll have to do some manual audio sync work in the Advanced Audio Properties in order to get the guitar to sync up with your desktop audio.

I've also included all the other gear that I use in order to do my guitar livestreams and videos.
Some of it overlaps with my normal livestreaming equipment, because I use both my key lights, mics and a bunch of other things for my normal livestreams as well.

Core

Here's the core of my setup. The Line 6 Helix LT is pretty much all you need.

This thing powers all my guitar livestreams and content that you see on the internet! I also use it for live gigs - just plug it straight into the PA and fix the volume and you're set.

I connect it to my PC using USB. Then, I install the ASIO plugin for OBS and load up the Line 6 Helix LT ASIO-driver in OBS as an Audio source using the ASIO plugin.

After that, you'll have to sync your desktop audio with the Line 6 Helix LT. I suggest you start with an audio sync offset of around 300 or 400ms and test to see what works.

You can also plug your Line 6 Helix LT into the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2. If you do so, you'd have to decide if you want to output Mono or Stereo. I use USB because it gives me Stereo, has better quality and has lower latency, but the difference is neg...

I use my Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 4th Gen to power my Shure SM7B and my Beyerdynamic DT 1990 Pro headphones. It can also be used to record an additional guitar source or anything else - should you have a guest present.

These headphones are probably the best ones you can get (for a reasonable price) for heavy metal music and guitar recording.

I'm using Equalizer APO on my computer to apply EQ - but that's not a requirement as these headphones features great sound straight out of the box!

I plug them into my Line 6 Helix LT to monitor my guitar sound so that my neighbours don't crash out on me. They come with 2 cables, both are quite long. I use one of them for my Line 6 Helix LT, and the other goes into the audio interface on my PC. ...

In fact, I use these for everything that I do! Mixing, mastering, guitar, gaming, music, you name it! I'd buy these again and again, but frankly, you only need one pair, lol.

Do NOT cheap out on XLR cables. Make sure they have Neutrik connectors, or else they'll most likely have a short lifespan and fail you when you need them the most.

These cables from Klotz have Neutrik connectors and are solid with excellent quality and isolation. I use them for both my microphone (Shure SM7B) and for connecting my Line 6 Helix LT to PA or an Audio Interface.

Direct Monitoring

If I don't want to use my headphones, I'll be using these!

This cabinet features Celestion Vintage 30 speakers, which are crucial in my opinion. It also has a really great sound for the type of music that I play, and are used by a wide variety of heavy metal and power metal guitarists.

I use this for monitoring my guitar when I perform live on Twitch or YouTube without using my headphones. It's very overkill, but hey - LOUD = METAL.

This is my main monitoring amp that I use to hear my guitar when I play live on stream or make Youtube videos and I don't want to use my headphones.

I have it set on the Clean channel, and have my Line 6 Helix LT plugged into it. It does color my tone slightly, but all in all, if you dial it in just right, it'll sound and feel like an amp in the room.

Used to power my ENGL cabinet without needing an expensive top head amplifier. I can then plug in my Line 6 Helix LT and use that as the “amp” and have it output straight to the cabinet without any extra tone coloration.

Stage

If you want to replicate the visual quality and simplicity of my setup, here's all the equipment that I use to set my stage.

When I'm just using my PC like normal, I connect my DT 1990 Pro headphones to this DAC, instead of my Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 4th Gen, to get louder volumes and the best possible quality.

I use this studio controller to adjust volumes, audio outputs, effects, backing tracks, music, and lots more!

It's essentially a deck with tons of shortcuts that you can setup to do a variety of different tasks.

Control lights, audio, play alerts, effects, control your stream, change OBS scenes, start and stop recordings, and in general optimize your workflow.

I cannot live without this.

I use these lights to make sure my camera quality looks decent. I've never had any issues with them. They connect with my Stream Deck and I can control them to fit the lighting conditions in my apartment (or stage).

This is the webcam that I use for all my livestreams and guitar recordings. Without proper lightning, I cannot recommend this camera. It requires a lot of light in order to look good - but once you have good lightning, it can look REAL good.

I think the sensor on it simply just requires a lot of light. The quality of the image reduces considerably once you start to increase the gain.

I use 1080p 60 FPS, and I do not stream nor record on this in 4K 30 FPS.

Tone

The Line 6 Helix LT creates the majority of my tones, but I'll also sometimes use various pedals to further create the sound that I want to make.

This has been my Wah-pedal since the first time I picked up a guitar. I use it sometimes in combination with my Line 6 Helix LT if I don't want to use the simulated Wah-pedals.

Probably the best Phase 90 pedal out there. It gives you some real good phaser sounds, much similar to the onboard script mod phase pedal on the Helix. This one is better, however. If you're gonna play some EVH, this pedal will get you closer to his ...

Wanna create some Tom Morello sounds? Well, this pedal is perfect for that. It's been in my repertoire for YEARS. You can even use it to simulate harmonized guitar leads.

You'll have to put it in the right spot of the chain, however. Either before the amp or in the FX Loop.
