Paper plates kept flying into the pond and plastic forks snapped in my pasta salad. Once I switched to a basket that came with actual plates and silverware, we looked like a couple from a movie instead of a disaster.

Our first park date involved a fleece blanket that bunched up every time we moved and soaked through from the damp grass. Never again.

Warm white wine at a picnic is a crime. I showed up once with a bottle that had been sitting in my hot car and we both took one sip and poured it out.

Balancing cheese and crackers on a paper plate while sitting on the ground is a skill I never mastered. A proper board changed everything about how we snack outside.

Playing music off a phone speaker while trying to be romantic is like serenading someone through a tin can. A small speaker made the vibe go from awkward to actually nice.

Ziplock bags full of grapes and sweaty cheese slices aren't exactly the romantic spread I was going for. Proper containers made the food actually look appetizing when we unpacked.

Once the sun went down on our first park date, we were just two people sitting in the dark eating cheese. Adding a little light made it feel intentional instead of creepy.

Warm hummus and melted chocolate-covered strawberries taught me the hard way that you need actual insulation, not just wishful thinking and a fast walk from the car.

Sitting directly on the ground for two hours stopped being cute about twenty minutes in. My back was screaming and my date kept shifting around trying to get comfortable.

Nothing kills a romantic moment like slapping a mosquito off your arm every thirty seconds. We almost abandoned a perfect sunset because the bugs were relentless.

We used to just eat and leave, but adding a dessert moment and proper glasses turned a picnic into something we actually look forward to all week.
